Sling Media introduced a $200 device in 2005 that lets you access your cable or satellite box or any other video source from virtually any Windows PC with broadband Internet access. It does this by digitizing your home TV source and streams it onto your home network. You can receive the video stream on a computer, your handheld or a cell phone that has the SlingPlayer software installed. The distance between the video source and the receiver is not a factor in the quality or the ability to get the signal. As long as you can get normal broadband speeds, you can watch your Slingbox player anywhere. If you travel and you’re half way around the world, you can enjoy your favorite TV programs.
The Slingbox tuner has easy to install software that uses an auto install program, making it easy for anyone to complete. Once installed, you receive a video window similar to QuickTime with channel controls. If you’re hooked up to satellite or other players, you’ll also get video controls like pause, rewind, fast-forward, and so on.
The good news is that lawyer experts have reported it doesn’t appear to break any laws - you’re only watching TV programs that you have already paid to view.
